Question: I’m not bleeding after a surgical abortion. Is this normal?

Question: Hi Doctor Joan.
I had a surgical aspiration abortion last friday (october 7th) 5 days ago.  I was 5.5 weeks (since start date of last period).  Procedure went well, I have had no bleeding, just a little bit of brownish discharge. Is this okay?  Also, yesterday and today I have had pretty intense cramps, but still no bleeding… is this fine?
Thank you for your time.
Take care,
Katie

Dear Katie,

It is common not to bleed after a surgical abortion or the aspiration procedure, especially when you are less than 7 weeks pregnant.  That said, it is also common to not have any bleeding, and then a few days later start to have bleeding and cramping.  Either way, it is normal, and there is no reason to be concerned.  Discharge is also common and normal, as long as it doesn’t have an obvious strong odor.

I hope this is helpful,

Doctor Joan
