Ask Dr. Joan: Did the abortion pill work?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 by drjoan

Question: I went in for a medical abortion wednesday, took the first pill and then took 2 pills on Friday at 8pm. Sunday around 3 i began spotting. Today is monday at 4pm, i still have barely bled at all. I have counted 3 actual “clumps” discharge. Very stringy bloody one with a bit of a gray patch in it. Is this ok? Did the pill do what it is supposed to? I feel like i should be bleeding more or seeing something. Dr estimated i was probably 4 or less weeks pregnant though. I am just concerned. Please respond to my question. Thankyou

Answer:  You should expect some bleeding when the abortion pill works, at any stage of pregnancy.  It should be at least as heavy as getting your period.  You should follow up with the doctor who prescribed the abortion pill and get a follow up visit.  Sometimes the abortion pill can work, and stop the pregnancy from growing, but then it doesn’t pass for days.  The doctor can determine whether the abortion pill stopped the pregnancy, but it didn’t pass, or whether it is a continuing pregnancy.

I hope this is helpful,

Doctor Joan
