Early
abortion with the RU486 pill has been safely provided for almost
two decades in Europe. It was approved by the Food & Drug
Administration in the United States in 2000.
Our doctor is one of the most experienced providers of the abortion
pill (RU486)
in the country. She was one of the original researchers of the abortion pill
in the United States before its approval by the FDA. As a faculty member of Cornell
Medical School she has taught doctors around the country how to best provide
the RU486 abortion pill.
The Abortion Pill (RU486) is
a 3 step process:
- You take
one pill in the office. This pills blocks the pregnancy hormones
from working. It stops the pregnancy from growing. (You
usually feel normal after taking the pill)
- You take a second
set of pills at home. You take the second set of pills at
least 24 hours after
taking the first pill. This causes you to pass the pregnancy.
You can take it at a time most convenient for you. Most
women have moderate cramping for minutes to hours. You are
given pain medicines to help with the cramps. Most women
have bleeding that is heavier than a period and usually lasts
for
hours. This bleeding then lightens and becomes more like
a period.
- You come back to the office for a follow
up visit. We check to make sure everything has passed. You
are likely to have some kind of spotting or irregular bleeding
for days or weeks. This is normal and anticipated. Since women
vary in the amount and length of bleeding, these issues are
fully discussed with your doctor at the time of your visit.
Below you will find a comparison of your options and their advantages:

| It
may seem more natural, like a miscarriage. |
It
is quick and over in a few minutes. |
| A
procedure is not needed unless it fails |
There´s
no routine follow up visit. It can be done further along in pregnancy. |
| Being
at home rather than in an office may seem more comforting and
private. You choose when and where. |
There
is less bleeding . The Doctor and the medical staff are always present. |
| Any
support person can be there during the process. |
Pregnancy
