Question:
i had a medical abortion on december 18. i bleed for about 3 weeks , my third week wasnt heavy. i was suppose to go for a check up on jan 8, i didnt go because i was on vacation. i did stop bleeding but then i had sex yesterday jan 12.. nd the bleeding started again …
why did this happen?
oh and i took a pregnancy test the day before my follow up and it came out positive , but im guessing it was because i still have pregnancy hormones am goin to take another one this week.

Answer:
Dear Becky,
It is common and normal to have intermittent bleeding like you describe after a medical abortion.  Everything sounds like it went as expected.  Sometimes sex can stimulate bleeding, discharge, or spotting because sex stimulates the uterus to contract.  If there is blood remaining in the uterus, the contractions during sex will expel the blood.  This is healthy and normal, and nothing to worry about.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
